Introduction
Exempla Healthcare consists of three hospitals and almost 7000 employees located in the Denver, Colorado area. The Exempla Healthcare team is focused on patient safety and satisfaction, employee and physician engagement, clinical excellence, and value. In 2006, leadership committed to update and streamline employee education and training across the system.
Challenge
Exempla Healthcare was challenged to find standardized required training that would meet The Joint Commission requirements for annual required training and new employee orientation, provide a cost-effective solution to deliver the training, and track compliance. The current method for training was PowerPoint presentations delivered by individual instructors.
Exempla Healthcare already had a SCORM conformant Learning Management System (LMS) that was used to track certifications for nursing and other areas. Any course delivery system would need to utilize their current infrastructure.Solution
Exempla Healthcare selected the entire PerforMax3 Courseware Catalog with the goals of 100% compliance on Annual Required Training, consistency and standardization of content between hospitals, and reduction of student time in training.
PerforMax3 conducted a 3-day implementation workshop involving Chief Learning Officers, WBT developers, clinical content experts and information technology professionals.
Participants were impressed with the critical elements of the PerforMax3 system:
- Pre-built, engaging courseware that was 95% ready for use
- Easy to use AuthorMax (ToolBook and PerforMax3 templates)
- Ease of integration with the already existing SumTotal LMS

“Prior to PerforMax3 we were in a state of famine regarding interactive web-based content. Now we have a state of abundance and PerforMax3 has helped us change the way we approach education and training. We’re real happy with this new direction. It has opened up people’s eyes to additional possibilities.
“PerforMax3 content runs very well in our LMS and our IT staff is delighted. The content has a consistent look and feel and students are not intimidated by the training.
“Students find the courseware easy to take and appreciate the flexibility to flip through topics or test out. Our RNs found very good information in the clinical courses and cited the content as good refresher/reminder information.
“The implementation has been absolutely successful in my eyes and in the eyes of Management. PerforMax3 has the best product out there for the right price. Authoring and content customization is easy and our developers are having fun!”

Introduction
Moncrief Army Community Hospital (MACH) is an organization of 1600 employees. Because of the war in Iraq, hospital staff members are regularly deployed to the Middle East, causing steady turnover and requiring new staff to be trained and oriented.
Challenge
The US Army has a number of training requirements including BEAR (annual regulatory training), clinical competence, and readiness courses. The challenge for MACH Executive Staff was to assure existing staff members maintain competency, and to orient the large influx of newcomers to the hospital.
Solution
MACH selected the PerforMax3 hosted solution. The internal IT Department agreed with the hosted solution because of manpower limitations and computer security challenges. MACH purchased a course package designed for the Army and set aside development funding to create eight new courses to meet special hospital and facility requirements.
An onsite implementation workshop was conducted for the educational staff and several content experts from areas such as Security, Nursing, and Quality. Students learned to use AuthorMax and quickly converted PerforMax3 lessons to meet site requirements. Several students also easily converted existing PowerPoint presentations into SCORM conformant on-line courses. Administrators spent one day learning the helpful features of the MaxTrax courseware management system. The MACH data base was set up prior to the workshop and participants learned to use the key features of managing students, lessons, courses, classes of employees, and reporting.
Results
“The training was tremendously helpful in getting us off the ground. The material was excellent and we were able to create new courses quickly. The PerforMax3 staff was highly credible both during the workshop and with follow up that was wonderful.
“The implementation was very successful. We did a Performance Improvement Analysis and we’re saving $153,000 a year which we’re applying to patient care and more online training.”
Capt. Frankie Bailey, Chief of Education and Training
Introduction
The National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland, is a large military hospital that was seeking content solutions for annual required training and command orientation for 4500 military and civilian employees. As one of the largest Naval Medical Centers in the country, NNMC serves as the flagship medical treatment facility, even providing medical services for the Executive Branch of the US Government.
Challenge
NNMC was looking for consistent, standard training that included Navy policies and procedures. Training content needed to be customized to reflect site-specific information and also be able to seamlessly integrate with their existing LMS, Navy Knowledge Online (NKO). In addition, many Navy personnel were being deployed to Iraq and other worldwide missions, increasing turnover and stressing education and training resources.
Solution
NNMC purchased the PerforMax3 solution with the goal of training over 4500 naval and civilian hospital personnel.
PerforMax3 facilitated a three-day implementation workshop where participants created a process for successful content customization and effective course management administration.
NNMC administrators found ToolBook Assistant and the PerforMax3 authoring templates easy to use in customizing their courseware. Guidelines and methods for working with content experts helped move the lesson customization process quickly.
The first production roll out of “Annual Command Training” included 4,278 military and civilian personnel.
Students were very positive about the lesson structure, the interactivity of the lessons, the flexibility of navigating to topics within each lesson, and the ability to “test out.” Program administrators rated PerforMax3 content as engaging and excellent. Students were very positive about their access to courses and lessons, and their ability to generate reports and certificates.
Results
The implementation at NNMC was so successful that the Navy purchased 40 PerforMax3 lessons to serve the needs of 92 medical treatment facilities and 58,000 military medical personnel worldwide.
“Course content is well designed, easy for the user to understand and navigate. The training includes use of graphics, text and interactive exercises to make the content engaging.
“The PerforMax3 solution offers benefits to Staff Education, includes 24/7 access to the learning, improved compliance and student tracking, and reduction in classroom seat time. Instructor-led Command Orientation has been reduced from 8 hours to 4 hours with the ability for students to take required lessons on-line. This is significant in terms of productivity savings and getting critical staff on the job much quicker. Content using the on-line system is always delivered consistently. Each lesson covers the majority of Annual Navy and Joint Commission requirements. Changes and updates to content can be made quickly.
“Benefits to the Medical Center include reduction in classroom hours and the ability for learners to access the system anytime/anywhere. Compliance is much better on-line and data is being integrated with Navy record-keeping systems. The PerforMax3 authoring system and rapid course development capability is being effectively used to migrate existing educational equity (PowerPoint presentations, etc.) to an interactive on-line format.
“Support from PerforMax3 during all phases of the project has been excellent. The quality of the content, the hands-on training using the authoring tools, and the guidance provided in setting up the implementation has been invaluable.”

Introduction
With 4500 employees, University Health System in San Antonio, Texas desired high quality training courseware that was easily customizable. Additionally, they were looking for a low cost content management solution. While they are perceived as a leader in health care, they had no existing e-learning system and no automated learning management system.
Challenge
University Health System was challenged to find quality on-line courseware with lessons that would be readily accepted and would apply across their organization. They wanted to put their best foot forward as they moved into e-learning to assure successful implementation of a wide-scale solution.
Their previous experience with computer based learning had been minimal, and used a primitive package with little or no interactivity. In addition, the University Health System training philosophy was to provide two to four methods of training for every topic in order to meet the needs of all learning styles.
Solution
University Health System selected the PerforMax3 Learning System. They were extremely pleased with the high quality content of the PerforMax3 On-Line Courseware, that it was fully customizable using the AuthorMax system or Toolbook Instructor Authoring system, and that is was easily maintained through MaxTrax courseware management- all at a price well below market costs.
The PerforMax3 team worked effectively with both the Training and IT Departments to implement their new system and to streamline the implementation process. PerforMax3 created a real-time interface that allowed University Health System to link the local Human Resources application to the MaxTrax database, and supported ongoing content development. PerforMax3 continues to offer excellent customer service and support.
Results
In less than four years, University Health System has instituted e-learning across their organization. Now the organization automatically expects that training will be deployed as e-learning. Both clinical and non-clinical departments are “clamoring for more” and want to convert most of the current training to on-line courseware.
University Health System has also realized efficiency savings through the automatic record keeping capabilities of MaxTrax. Now one style, e-learning, has become the training method of choice and has simplified record keeping, particularly with the automatic features of MaxTrax.
“It was indeed a lucky day for me and University Health System when I discovered PerforMax3. I was looking for some high quality lessons in the area of JCAHO compliance training for health care, and a reasonably priced LMS to manage all of our on-line training. PerforMax3 hit the nail on the head on both counts.
“As pleased as I am with their lessons and LMS, the real value is in their service and support. The best on line training in the world is useless if it doesn't work. PerforMax3 has really come through for us, from making sure we were up, running, and fully capable at the very beginning, to answering any questions we have had, to helping resolve any problems that popped up along the way. I have never had the same high level of service and support from any other vendor I have dealt with!
“I have recommended PerforMax3 to others in the industry many times, and will continue to do so. It is a real pleasure to do business with a company that is as professional and ethical as PerforMax3. I no longer consider them a vendor, but rather a partner in our business.”
